TURNTABLE FURNITURE

Manager's Report

Once again, Turntable has had a really busy year delivering 18% more furniture and electrical appliances to our clients whose numbers also increased by 12½%. Due to the generosity of the residents of Exeter and surrounding areas, we managed to keep up with demand by collecting 50% more items than the previous year.

As a result of a break-in and parts of our premises being condemned, it became our focus this year to raise funds to demolish these areas and site steel containers in their place. Thanks to Exeter City Council and several grant making trusts, we have now cleared areas for three containers, one of which will be used as a workshop and the other two for storage. The containers have been ordered and will be delivered during April.

Once again, I must say a big thank you for the dedication and hard work of Pete Chowings, Warehouse Supervisor and our volunteers. Especially to Keith Taylor who has worked so hard for us for 15 years, Ian Bissett who has worked tirelessly on our vans for 8 years, Michael Daly who has worked in our workshop for the past 7 years, John Hawken and Paul Spicer who have manned our reception for the past 8 years and Patrick Upchurch, ably assisted by James O’Halloran, whose expertise and hard work is invaluable.

To give an idea of just how much effort Pete and our volunteers put in to the work that Turntable does, the furniture and electrical items that we supplied this year weigh a total of 161 tonnes. This means that they have lifted at least 4 times this (644 tonnes) as each item that is loaded on to our van is offloaded back at Turntable then reloaded and offloaded when we deliver it!

Again, Turntable’s Committee together with Councillor Vanessa Newcombe has been very supportive, and I would like to thank them for their time and assistance.  Everyone here at Turntable is looking forward to another busy but rewarding year supplying furniture and electrical appliances to those who can least afford to buy new.
